Motorbike Rental in Nai Harn, Phuket

Nai Harn sits at the very southern tip of Phuket, tucked between green hills — the quietest swimming beach in the south of the island, with a freshwater lake and the walled Wat Nai Harn right behind the sand. It is a beautiful place to stay and an awkward place to be without transport: there is no shopping street, the supermarkets are in Rawai and Chalong, and every way out of the bay is a climb. North to Kata the road goes up the long, steep pass past the Karon Viewpoint; south it rises again towards the windmills and Promthep Cape. That is why almost everyone staying here ends up on two wheels, and why motorbike rental in Nai Harn is worth thinking about before you arrive rather than after.

We do not have a walk-in office in Nai Harn — our nearest branch is in Karon: Patak Rd 306/3, open daily 08:00–20:00, phone and WhatsApp +66 622 843 198. From there to the Nai Harn lake is roughly 10–11 km through Kata and over the hill, about 20–25 minutes. You can collect the bike at the office, or we bring it to your hotel or villa in Nai Harn. Paperwork takes around 10 minutes: a passport (we make the copy ourselves and never keep the original) and a cash deposit of 3 000฿ for scooters up to 160cc or 7 000฿ for the Forza 350 and ADV 350. We do not ask for a driving licence to rent; note, though, that Thai law requires a category A or A1 licence to ride.

The cheapest model in our fleet is the Honda Scoopy 110 at 350฿ a day, and the daily rate drops with the rental length: a Click 160 ABS is 450฿ for one day, 260฿ a day from 7 days and 4 500฿ for a month. The full table for every model is on the prices page.

Which bike to choose for Nai Harn

Nai Harn is the one area on Phuket where engine size genuinely matters, because the bay is ringed by hills. The 4233 between Kata Noi and Nai Harn is a long climb with tight bends and a steady gradient, and the road up to the Windmill Viewpoint and Promthep Cape climbs again. Take that into account:

• Honda Click 125 — fine if you mostly stay local: the beach, the lake, the temple, dinner in Rawai along the flat road. It will manage the Kata hill solo, but two-up you will be crawling.
• Honda Click 160 or PCX 160 — the model we recommend most often for Nai Harn. Enough torque to hold a steady speed uphill with a passenger, and the PCX is noticeably more comfortable over the whole day.
• Honda ADV 160 — taller suspension for the rough narrow lane to Ao Sane and the unsealed access track to the windmills, and the best choice if the road surface bothers you.
• Honda Forza 350 — if Nai Harn is only your base and you plan long days: Phuket Town, the northern beaches, the airport. Strong on any climb and stable on the highway.

Two helmets come with every bike, plus medical insurance covering up to 50 000฿ in an accident. All our bikes are new and Honda only. On the way down the hill use engine braking and short brake applications instead of holding the lever — long descents heat the brakes.

Where to park a bike in Nai Harn

Parking here is far easier than on the west-coast tourist strips, and mostly free — you just need to know where.

• The wood behind the beach. Three lanes run side by side under the casuarina trees; motorbikes go along the edges. Do not park on the soft sand at the end of the lanes — it is easy to drop a scooter and hard to push it back out.
• Near the back of Wat Nai Harn. The main beach entrance is by the temple and there is almost always free space there, even in high season.
• Along the lake. There is room on the lakeside road near the causeway and the cluster of bars and restaurants at the north-east end of the lake. Keep the carriageway clear: it is narrow and songthaews use it.
• Viewpoints. Promthep Cape has a large car park, but the Windmill Viewpoint is reached by a narrow unpaved lane with very little space — park where the track widens and walk the last part, especially at sunset when everyone arrives at once.

Where to ride from Nai Harn

The south of the island is compact, so from Nai Harn the best rides are short and scenic.

• Windmill Viewpoint, Ya Nui and Promthep Cape — 3–4 km south, 10–15 minutes, all on one loop. Ya Nui is a small cove below the windmills; Promthep is the sunset spot, so leave early to get a parking space.
• Rawai — about 4 km along the flat road past the lake, 10 minutes. The pier, the longtail boats and the seafood market where you pick a fish and have it cooked next door.
• Karon Viewpoint, Kata and Karon — the pass north on Route 4233. The viewpoint over three beaches is 4–5 km from Nai Harn, Kata about 8 km, Karon 10–11 km. Ride it in daylight the first time.
• The Big Buddha via Chalong — around 18 km, 35 minutes, and the last 6 km are a continuous climb up Nakkerd Hill. A half-day out with a 160cc or bigger.

Police checks, licence and helmets

Nai Harn itself is quiet, but the roads out of it are watched: checkpoints work regularly on Wiset Road through Rawai and at Chalong Circle, which is where all traffic from the south of the island funnels through. A helmet is compulsory for both rider and passenger and riding without one can cost up to 2 000฿ per person — that is why two helmets come with every bike. We do not require a driving licence to rent: a passport and the cash deposit are enough. Thai law, however, requires a category A or A1 licence — international or Thai — to ride a motorbike, and that is what the police check: riding without it is a 1 000฿ fine, and the responsibility is the rider's own. Bike delivery to Nai Harn

Bikes for Nai Harn come from our Karon office, 10–11 km away through Kata and over the hill — 20–25 minutes. On rentals of 5 days or more, delivery to your hotel or villa is free. On shorter rentals delivery is paid: the price depends on how far the address is and the manager confirms it before you book.
