Two beaches and the hill between them

Kata is really two different places. Kata is the main beach with cafés, shops and surf schools. Kata Noi is the small quiet bay behind the hill — and that hill decides everything: on foot it is a long uphill walk, on a bike it takes a couple of minutes.

Because of the terrain, Kata is the area where a bike is not a luxury but simply how you live here. The coast road constantly climbs and drops, and any trip round the corner turns into a hill.

Which bike to choose for Kata

The climbs here are the steepest of the three neighbouring beaches — steeper than in Karon or Patong. That is the main thing to weigh up:

  • Honda Click 125 — fine if you are on your own and mostly riding around Kata itself. On the flat part of the village it has plenty in reserve.
  • Honda Click 160 or PCX 160 — if you ride two-up. On the climb to Kata Noi and up to Karon Viewpoint a 125 runs out of breath with a passenger: the speed drops and you have to build momentum in advance. A 160 takes it calmly.
  • Honda ADV 160 or FORZA 350 — if you plan longer runs south and to Phuket Town. Bigger wheels, better suspension, more confident on the switchbacks.

Not sure? Take one for a couple of days and switch models when you extend — that is routine and there is no charge for the swap.

Where to ride from Kata

Kata is the closest of these beaches to the south of the island, and that is its main advantage.

  • Karon Viewpoint — the three-bay overlook, a few minutes up the road. Early morning is best, before the coaches arrive.
  • Nai Harn and Promthep Cape — further south: a calm beach, a lagoon and Phuket's best-known sunset spot.
  • Rawai and the seafood market — also in the south, where they cook your catch in front of you.
  • Karon and Patong — north along the coast road, over the hill.

Surf season, rain and wet roads

The waves at Kata arrive with the rainy season, roughly May to October. That also means wet tarmac — and on Kata's climbs and descents a wet road is far less forgiving than on the flat.

The rules are simple: brake early and with both brakes, never lean into a corner on wet road markings, and after a shower keep a bigger gap for the first few minutes. Coming down the hill to Kata Noi, slow down before the bend rather than in it. There is more in our article on Phuket's slippery roads. A rain poncho costs almost nothing in any 7-Eleven and saves both you and the seat.

Bike delivery

For rentals of 5+ days, delivery across Kata and Kata Noi is free. Send your hotel address, bike model, period and a passport photo via WhatsApp — the bike arrives clean and fueled. We'll also collect it from your hotel at the end.

Frequently asked questions about bike rental in Kata

How much does bike rental in Kata cost?
Honda Click 125 — 400฿/day or 4,000฿/month (about 135฿ a day). PCX 160 — 600฿/day, Forza 350 — 1,200฿/day. Live prices are in the table above.
How do I get the bike in Kata?
Two ways: drop by our office at Patak Rd 306/3 (5 minutes from Kata) or order hotel delivery — free for rentals of 5+ days.
Is a scooter enough for Kata's hills?
Yes. For two riders with bags we recommend the PCX 160 or ADV 160 — plenty of torque for the climbs to Kata Noi and the viewpoints.
Where is your office if I am staying in Kata?
On Patak Road 306/3 — the Karon–Kata road, about five minutes from Kata by bike. You can come to us or ask for hotel delivery: send the address on WhatsApp.
Is the ride to Kata Noi hard two-up?
On a 125 the climb is a struggle, especially with luggage. For Kata Noi and Karon Viewpoint with a passenger we recommend a Click 160, PCX 160 or larger.
Can I ride during the rainy season?
Yes, people ride all year. Just allow more time, brake early and keep your distance: Kata's climbs and descents demand care on wet tarmac.
Is there anywhere to park near Kata beach?
Hotels usually have their own guest parking, and there is space along the road down to the beach. Avoid the red-and-white kerbs.
