Random police checks are common in Phuket, especially in areas like Patong, Karon, and Kata. Checkpoints are regular police inspections set up in fixed locations. Fines and Penalties for Traffic Violations

Fines of up to 2,000 baht are issued for driving against traffic or for not wearing a helmet or seatbelt. Driving without regard for the safety of other road users may result in imprisonment for up to one year and/or fines ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 baht. Repeat offenses of driving under the influence within two years after the first incident may lead to imprisonment for up to two years and/or fines from 50,000 to 100,000 baht.
